Warning of Heavy Rain Across Assam due to Cyclone Sitrang

GUWAHATI: As cyclone Sitrang is about to make landfall, rain warnings have been issued in several parts of the country. The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) issued Red and Orange alerts for heavy rains in the state of Assam on Sunday. These warnings are for the next two days.

The report predicted, "Extremely Heavy (20 cm in 24 hours) rainfall is very likely to occur in Cachar, Dima Hasao and Karimganj districts tomorrow."

"Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to Very Heavy (12-20 cm in 24 hours) rainfall is very likely to occur over Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts," mentioned the report from IMD.

For Tuesday, "Heavy" (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to "Very Heavy" (12-20 cm in 24 hours) rainfall is very likely over Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, mentioned the report.

Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati said the deep depression over the west-central and adjoining east-central region of the Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards with a speed of 18 kmph. It will likely move northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm over the central region of the Bay of Bengal. Thereafter, it would recurve and move north-northeastwards and cross the coast of Bangladesh between Tinkona Island and Sandwip, close to Barisal around the early morning of October 25.

Several regions of West Bengal and Assam woke up to a spell of light showers and overcast skies on Monday.

As per the predictions, cyclone Sitrang is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm. It may cause heavy to very heavy rain and wind reaching speeds of 90 to 100 kmph in the coastal districts of West Bengal on Monday. The cyclone is expected to make landfall in Bangladesh and the Indian coast on Tuesday morning (October 25). According to the forecast, the Sundarbans, on both sides of the international border are likely to receive the maximum impact.
